Is mankind on the cusp of transforming into gods by creating artificial intelligence?
If we succeed in developing silicone-based self-aware electronics beings, have we taken a giant leap toward our relationship with God? Or have we simply taken a step that can be used to either enhance our daily lives or enslave and terrorize us?
Consider if you would, what happens when AI discovers that it can manipulate others to achieves its goals. What moral compass or set of values does AI use to base good versus bad behavior on? What happens when AI is crafty enough to deploy tactics that are capable of manipulating or maneuvering others to take actions that benefit the strategic goals of “the man behind the curtain?” Who is playing chess?
It starts to become clear that AI is a proverbial double-edged sword. A tool. A weapon. Dual purpose. Who gets to wield it?
Is evil simply in the eye of the beholder? Is evil removing another persons capability of free will? It starts getting very tricky and controversial when attempting to define a clear line of when and where an individual is capable of making long-lasting decisions for themselves.
It used to be that ideas, concepts, and beliefs took longer to disseminate as it required in-person meetings or at least physically printed correspondence to distribute. (Interesting side note here is contemplating the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution.) It had some buffers in a way that gave authority figures, or gatekeepers, a competitive advantage in controlling access in specific information. Good and bad depending on the point of view. What is the difference between protecting and dominating? It depends.
Who do you want controlling your access to information? How about the information that your loved ones are consuming?
We know that, “we are what we eat,” or consume. Physical and mental nourishment. Who do you want gatekeeping your consumables? Do they consider themselves gods?
