I have been on a journey/adventure exploring my internal self and why I have been frustrated with jobs and seem to be repeatedly taking second place in interviews; as well as, “What do I really want to be doing?”
I have been attending some training/coaching around neurosomatic conditioning. In a nutshell, it is recognizing sensations within your body and identifying the emotions and underlying beliefs that produce that feeling.
In some ways, I think that I have learned more in the last couple of months than I have my entire life. Now, I know that isn’t quite true; it is just that I am now recognizing the patterns that I have seemingly been haphazardly wandering through. Walking in circles if you will. My software engineering background helps me make the connection between code and design patterns. In a way, I’ve just been caught in an endless loop structure.
Synchronistically, (yes, I recently learned a new word and excited to actually use it! HA!) I have been reading, studying, and working on self improvement, coaching, and motivation. I took the Motivating By Appreciation (MBA) Inventory from the book “The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace” by Gary Chapman & Paul White; a coaching session on recognizing processing types; and reading the book “Peaks and Valleys” by Spencer Johnson, M.D.
I showed my beautiful bride my MBA Inventory results and she asked if my least valued language of appreciation was just a belief. FLOORED! WOW! How had I not seen that before? Then I read, “Were they just trying to escape reality by dulling their senses?” in “Peaks and Valleys.”
AHA! There’s the pattern!
Our human system encodes neurosomatic pathways in an effort to give us an evolutionary advantage in survival instincts – fight or flight. However, sometimes, these pathways (beliefs) do not really serve us well and lead us to into self-limiting and self-destructive actions and behaviors. Do we own our destiny and take charge to live life to the fullest or do we cower and dull ourselves into oblivion?
The MOST AWESOME part?!?! YOU CAN CHANGE IT!!!
Sample exercise:
– Take a few deep cleansing/clearing breathes.
– Now feel into your body and listen to what is screaming the loudest
– See what color it is, the shape, and feel the texture.
– Identify what the first emotion is that jumps to your mind?
– Dig deeper and listen to your feeling and see what story you are telling yourself of why you are feeling it.
– Sit with that for a moment.
– Now say out loud, “I am a giant purple banana taco.”
– How does that feel?
– Recognize a shift? Check back into that sensation that was screaming? See if it feels different now.
Yes? AWESOME! CONGRATS! You now have a tool to break an endless loop.
