I have been putting effort into improving my physical fitness level. I believe that our capacity to respond with the quality that we strive to deliver is directly relational to the quality of effort that we put in. What does that mean? It encompasses the foods and liquids that we consume along with the mental and spiritual stimulation we provide our brains with.
For me, this includes morning and evening walks, sometimes I may run for a bit as well. I use a fitness tracking app on my phone to calculate approximate distance, steps, and effort. My current goals are a minimum of 5000 steps and 30 heart points. Most days I am able to easily achieve these, some days I use it as a motivator to move a little more.
Yesterday, I was thinking a bit about life 150 – 2000 years ago. When people walked and ran everywhere. How far did people actually walk? Did some people actually walk over 1000 miles? Does that seem crazy? Wait a minute, 1000 miles in how long? A year? Hold on, that averages out to be approximately 2.74 miles a day…
Everyone’s stride length differs and you can calculate your own fairly easily if you’d like to know. You can search the internet and find that averages range between 2000 steps 2500 steps per mile. So, 2 2/3 miles is between 5500 and 6875 steps… I’m already doing that! I’m on track to walk 1000 miles this year! Awesome!
I did a quick search and found there is a website (https://www.1000milechallenge.org/) dedicated to an annual 1000 mile challenge.
I have been musing over the idea that we build this idea that something is impossible, like walk 1000 miles. However, with a little creative thinking the seemingly impossible as suddenly well within our grasp. We just have to reach out and commit to making the small daily tasks of working towards the goal.
When I walk I like to use that time to work on mental, emotional, and spiritual tasks as well. Reflecting, reviewing, brainstorming, experimenting. No judgment, no shame, just curiosity. See what comes up. Sometimes I take action, sometimes I let it burn off with calories.
I have decided that I want to walk a minimum of 3.33 miles each day. That approximates out to over 100 miles per month and a whopping 1200 miles a year!
What would you walk 1000 miles for?
